MovieRoyale is your daily dose of movies and TV. Every day there are new challenges to show how much you know about movies, series, actors and directors, with games like The Cast, Movie Grid, Hidden Star, Blind Filmography, Six Degrees, Box Office, Hot & Cold, Letters and Pyramid; in the Series menu, Hidden Series, Groups, Series Grid, Episode, Timeline and Seasons; and in Spanish Cinema, its own versions of the movie games, like Goyas: Higher or Lower?
The Movies menu has nine: The Cast (guess which actors are in the movie of the day), Movie Grid, Hidden Star (guess the actor or actress), Blind Filmography, Six Degrees, Box Office: Higher or Lower?, Hot & Cold, Letters and Pyramid. In Spanish Cinema you'll find versions dedicated to Spanish films, with Goyas: Higher or Lower? instead of Box Office.
Yes. Hidden Star is the actor wordle: each guess shows with colors how close you are to the actor or actress of the day. Hidden Series works the same way with TV shows, and the Anime menu has Hidden Anime and Hidden Character.
It's a hot-and-cold game, like Contexto: you have to guess a secret item, and every guess gets a closeness score from 0 to 100 based on how similar it is (the secret scores 100). It's in all four menus: in Movies and Spanish Cinema you guess an actor or actress; in TV Shows, a series; and in Anime, a character. Every 10 guesses (when you reach guesses 11, 21, 31…) you get a hint based on your closest guess since the previous hint: it tells you something that guess has in common with the secret, without revealing who it is; it's never something almost everyone shares, and each hint is more specific than the last. For example, if your closest guess is Tanjiro Kamado, the hint could be “The secret character and Tanjiro Kamado both fight with a sword”. On Easy (100 guesses) you can get up to 9 hints; on Normal (20), 1, one of the most useful; and on Hard (10), none.
You have to guess a word letter by letter, and every guess colors its letters: 🟩 the letter is in the right spot, 🟨 it's in the word but in another spot, and ⬛ it's not in the word. It's in all four menus: in Movies and Spanish Cinema you guess the last name (or one-word stage name) of a well-known actor, actress or director; in TV Shows, the name of a TV character; and in Anime, an anime character's name. The word has 4 to 8 letters, and the tiles show you how many from the start. You can ask for hints without using up guesses, but they cost points: on Easy (8 guesses) as many as you want; on Normal (6), 2; and on Hard (5), none.
Every day there's a category, like “Highest worldwide box office”, and 10 items to rank from 1 (the most) to 10 in a 4-row pyramid: 1 spot at the top and then 2, 3 and 4 below it. The items show up one at a time, with their poster or photo, and you pick which free spot each one goes in. Once all 10 are in, you can review the pyramid and swap items by tapping one and then another (or dragging them with the mouse); nothing is checked until you press Check. It's in all four menus: in Movies you rank movies or performers by box office, budget, runtime, year, number of movies or age; in Spanish Cinema, by Goya Awards won, nominations, year, runtime or number of movies; in TV Shows, by episodes, seasons or year; and in Anime, by episodes, year or popularity on AniList. You get 1 point for every item in the right spot and the crown 👑 for 10 out of 10. On Easy and Normal there's a one-time help button that tells you how many are in the right spot at that moment (also during the review, so you can rearrange afterwards); on Hard, the figures are very close together and there's no help.
Every challenge resets each day at midnight, Spain time (CET/CEST). The countdown on the home page tells you how long until the next ones.
There are four: Movies, Series, Spanish Cinema and Anime. Each one has its own daily challenges.
Yes. MovieRoyale works in the browser of any phone, tablet or computer, with nothing to download. To keep it handy, you can add it to your home screen from your browser's menu.
Yes. The whole site is in English and Spanish: switch languages with the “ES | EN” selector in the header. Your games and streaks stay the same when you switch.
No. You can play without creating an account. Your progress and streaks are saved in your browser, so if you switch devices or clear your browser data you'll start from scratch.
Yes: Easy, Normal and Hard. Everyone who picks the same level plays the same challenge of the day; depending on the game, the level changes the number of guesses, the hints or how tight the challenge is (in games like Box Office or Timeline, each level has its own selection). That way you can compare results with your friends.
Not by default: you can take your time. If you want some extra excitement, a few games, like Box Office or Seasons, have an optional against-the-clock mode.
For now, MovieRoyale focuses on the challenge of the day so that the whole community plays the same thing. We're working on an archive of past challenges.
When you finish a challenge you can copy your result as emojis, without giving away the answer, to share it on social media or with your friends. If you asked for hints or help, the result shows it (for example, “💡2” means two hints).
No. In games with a hint button, asking for one doesn't cost guesses or lives: it takes points off your final score and you can no longer earn the 👑 crown. In Blind Filmography each hint takes 10 points off; in Six Degrees, the hint and “See filmography” add +1 each. The exception is Groups' “Reveal a series” (Normal), which does cost a life.
At the end of each game, and on the result screen, there's a “Spotted an error?” link. It opens a short form where you choose the type of error (a correct answer that wasn't accepted, wrong data, a misspelled name, the wrong image, something that doesn't work...) and describe it. The game, the challenge and the difficulty are added automatically. If you leave us your email, we'll get back to you; we'll only use it for that.
Yes, MovieRoyale is completely free.
The data comes from TMDB (The Movie Database), including premiere years and series episodes. Box Office grosses are also cross-checked with Wikidata, and in Spanish Cinema, the region of birth and the Goya Awards come from Wikidata and Wikipedia (the nominations in Goyas: Higher or Lower? come from each ceremony's list on Wikipedia, under the CC BY-SA 4.0 license). If you spot an error, let us know.
